Our Mentorship program applies to Teachers,
Coaches, High Performance Athletes, High Performance Individuals, Performing
Arts Individuals, Students
Some of the History
Mentorship in itself has a short history
but that does not diminish it’s "raison d’être". It has the merit
to have become a necessity in many spheres of the society, professions, the
business world and last but not least the sports’ world
Presently the service is offering mostly
support, knowledge and companionship in various domains. In the province of
Quebec, this type of service has been offered at the Bois-Francs School Board
for the last ten years and has had some success. At least it fulfills a need to
the new teachers arriving in the profession after having graduated from the
university
Then there has been the planning for the
development of a degree being under research with the collaboration of the
University of Sherbrooke and it has revealed that it fulfilled a profound need
for the novice teachers. The University of Sherbrooke then eventually provided a
program at the Faculty of Education where some 25 teachers graduated in
Mentorship and became into function throughout the Quebec School Board
The Mentorship program in the Quebec School
Board is aimed to provide some support in relation to school integration and
adaptation, encouraging professional exchange, eliminate isolation on the part
of the teachers, offer security to individuals and eventually valorize
initiative in the profession
Sports Canada has also initiated a
Mentorship program in order to support their High Performance Athletes. Most
individuals who are going into Mentorship are former medal winners or athletes.
The strong point they are exercising is that "they have been there, they
know the path to success" which is fine in a way, but you can achieve only
so much. It also depends on the needs of the particular athlete, like if he/she
only need some support, companionship and a motivational boost. If this is the
case then it will do just fine
So far what is it exactly that Mentorship
has to offer ?
Mostly help and support, provision of
knowledge and the merit to be centered to the person first
Is it enough ? Why is it, in a certain way,
that Mentorship can only be a function and not a Profession ?
Because it has a short history ? Not really
From my experience, mentors in high
performance sports can only do so much. There is a profound lack of depth and
competence. They are not in a position to question the education and teaching
processes, nor can they question the psychological development of the athletes
they are being involved with. They can, however, compare from the professional
assistance they have received in the past with the one the athlete is presently
being exposed to
I have met some of the mentors in the
Quebec School Board and some seniors teachers. I found that they can certainly
provide and excellent support within their own subject matter. The problem is
that they are sort of restricted to that. They cannot cope with profound
problems that would require the sciences of Psychology of Learning, Psychology
of Education or compose with dysfunctional problems on the part of students.
What is lacking most is that their auditory does not have a culture of
Excellence. The School Board System simply does not allow it
So what does it need to eventually make
Mentorship become a Profession ?
It certainly needs a Philosophy !

A Scientific Approach
Mentorship needs to carry its purpose so
much further than it does presently and one of the ways is to provide expertise
in relation to Support Sciences through the following domains: Educational
Science, Sport Science, Teaching Science, Coaching Science
We feel that a true Mentorship program
needs to be in a position and have the competence to evaluate the educational,
learning and development environment of the person we are going to be involved
with
Professionalism
Professionalism has many faces and relating
it to a profession and competence is not enough. As examples we could say that
there are doctors who are not true professionals, there are professional
athletes who are not really professionals and last but not least there are
educators or teachers who are not really professionals
When human condition depends on the
practice of your profession, you absolutely cannot make any mistake otherwise
you are not really a true professional
To be a true professional we must have the
following qualities, habits and culture: Competence, Excellence, Effectiveness,
Accountability
Competence that makes sure that you Master
your Profession, that you possess all the knowledge in relation to your
functions and roles. That is a must if you are going to be an effective
solutions provider
Excellence means more than being the best,
it means your capacity to constantly extend your limits as a professional, to
have that desire. You have to have the desire to become the best that you can
possibly be in your profession, every day. Never being content of who you are as
a professional and it has to show through your behavior
Effectiveness is the ability to do always
the "right thing". Your ability to understand the "importance
paradigm". You simply cannot get caught, being wrong, in the practice of
your profession
Accountability is the constant expression
of who you are about in the practice of your profession. It is the constant
expression of being responsible for the choices, the decisions, the actions that
you manifest in the practice of your profession
Personal Human Development
In the world of Education, High Performance
whether in Sports or in Performing Arts, students or athletes are being taught
"field skills", "competence skills" throughout their phase
of education to achieve their profession. It is not really enough. Those skills
eventually may become limiting factors
What is the missing link ?
Through times we have improved so much our
ability to develop field skills for our athletes or students but the percentage
of individuals reaching the Excellence Status is far too low and not acceptable
in my point of view. As a Researcher I have discovered that no nation, no
institution, throughout the world, has ever developed "human
character". There is a universal attitude being maintained that human
character is an inborn quality
It is not !
Human character can be developed if we
provide the right environment just the same as we can develop field skills. So I
was not content to just criticize, I chose to create and developed an Expert
System in relation to Character Development. The name of this knowledge system
is Character Profile View and is located in our Consulting4
Effectiveness Department
The theme of Character Profile View
is:
"If field and competence skills allow you to perform, character skills will
always make the difference, it will permit to make sure you reach the end of
yourself, all the time"
Human development, in our approach takes
care also of the development of human and mental skills. Psychological
